The Rev. Dr. Suzanne Nicholson, Professor of New Testament at Asbury University (Wilmore, Kentucky), will address the Wesleyan Covenant Association’s Sixth Global Gathering – More Than Conquerors – in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Saturday, May 7, 2022.
“Suzanne is a remarkable preacher and teacher of the Gospel for new generations of the church. Her gift for presenting deep biblical content clearly and winsomely stirs the college students she teaches on a daily basis as well as those of us in the local church who sit under her preaching,” said the Rev. Jessica LaGrone, Dean of the Chapel at Asbury Theological Seminary (Wilmore, Kentucky) and a member of the WCA’s Global Council. “I’m thankful that Suzanne, who has embraced the true calling and expression of the office of deacon, is addressing the WCA’s Sixth Global Gathering at this important moment.”
At More Than Conquerors, Nicholson will focus on the amazing way Jesus becomes a conqueror by exploring the great passage from Paul’s Letter to the Philippians, where he writes that Christ “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness” (2.1-11).
A graduate of the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis – St. Paul), Nicholson received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism. After completing a Master of Divinity degree at Asbury Theological Seminary, she went on to earn her Doctor of Philosophy degree in New Testament Studies from the University of Durham (Durham, England). Prior to teaching at Asbury University, she served for 16 years on the faculty at Malone University (Canton, Ohio) as Professor of Biblical Studies. She was ordained a deacon in The United Methodist Church in 2008, and she serves on the WCA’s Global Council.
“I want my students to be able to read Scripture well by understanding the historical and literary contexts and by carefully observing the details of the text,” said Nicholson. “I want my students to want to study Scripture – I want them to see the richness and beauty of Scripture, and to grow closer to God as a result.”
The author of the books Dynamic Oneness: The Significance and Flexibility of Paul’s One-God Language (Pickwick, 2010) and Women in the New Testament: An Eight-Week Bible Study (Seedbed, 2020), Nicholson has also written numerous articles, most recently “Educating Undergraduates for the Next Methodism” in The Next Methodism (Seedbed, 2021). She also writes regularly for Firebrand, where she serves as the magazine’s Assistant Lead Editor.
“Suzanne is an outstanding scholar who is deeply committed to the church’s historic faith and the Wesleyan vision of salvation,” said the Rev. Dr. David Watson, Academic Dean and Professor of New Testament at United Theological Seminary (Dayton, Ohio) and a member of the WCA’s Global Council. “She has become one of the most important voices in our new Methodist movement.”
Nicholson has two college-aged children, and she lives in Nicholasville, Kentucky, with her husband Lee and their dog, Wesley.
More Than Conquerors, the WCA’s Sixth Global Gathering, will be held at Kingsway Christian Church with seating for 1,260 people.
