The East Ohio Wesleyan Covenant Association has approved the following letter to be sent to Bishop Malone as a word of encouragement for her to support the inclusion of “The Protocol of Reconciliation and Grace Through Separation,” as an addition to the agenda at the special called virtual General Conference. We copied the letter to the Council of Bishops with the intent of reinforcing the importance of this request. The necessity of separation is evident. If you would like more information about the WCA please contact us with your questions. We have teams of presenters willing to meet with churches, church leadership, and ministers about the WCA.
Dear Bishop Malone,
The United Methodist Church stands at the crossroads of a great decision. This decision will require the Council of Bishops to give prudent thought to the counsel offered to the entire membership of the UMC. Your decisive counsel will determine how church history will define this moment. The issue before you, as well as the entire denomination, is whether to support or postpone what is entitled, “Protocol of Reconciliation and Grace Through Separation” to August 2022, an in-person General Conference.
We encourage the Council of Bishops to expand the agenda at the virtual General Conference scheduled for May 8 to include the “Protocol of Reconciliation and Grace Through Separation.”
The decision to consider this will provide a graceful path to the renewal of the existing UMC, and it will recognize and support the existing traditional Methodist movement. The postponement of addressing this issue will continue to foster discord and disillusionment among clergy and members of the UMC.
We propose the inclusion of the Protocol as currently written without amendments or debate allowing the delegates to decide the future of the UMC by their vote.
We are appreciative of your leadership during the challenging time of the pandemic and singularly request you make the inclusion of the ‘Protocol’ a matter of prayer and reflection.
This communication is sent with the approval of the East Ohio Wesleyan Covenant Association. Also, a copy has been sent to the attention of the Council of Bishops.
All for the Kingdom.
Rev. Dr. Chester H. Harris
East Ohio WCA Regional Director
